Now Its Cold

Yesterday I thought it was about 30°F when I left for work. I put on the full rig (I look something like the Michelin guy) and actually was a bit warm on the way. Turns out I forgot to turn on the electric vest and didn't need to turn on the electirc grips. Also turns out it was actually 26°F.

I've got the Virago just about right. I took the resistors out of the wire caps and installed Bosch platimum plugs. I do have to use a little choke to start, but two minutes later (I just take off, I don't warm it up) with the choke off the bike idles placidly at 900 rpm.

I have concluded that if there is any water in the fuel or if conditions are right (cold and foggy), the idle jet in one of the carbs will freeze. She idles pretty lousy on one cylinder. So a couple of ounces of Seafoam in every other tank of gas takes care of that.

It was warmer this morning (something like 36°F), so I left off the heavy coat and ran all the heat...sweet. I could ride indefinitely like this.

One thing you have to pay more attention to is cold tires and messy roads. Even dry, the road to work has a film of oil, scum, dirt and dust. The old Virago will jack that big 150 on the rear around a bit if you are careless. The Avons, though, are very predictable and if they slip a little you still have full control. Pretty sweet.
